Module I

The amazonian environment as a place to live

The topic that we begin the course with seems like the natural starting point: in order to talk about the people living the Amazon region, it is necessary to talk about the environment they live in first. Every culture adapts to natural conditions in their surrounding so I decided to begin with information about the biodiversity of the forest and waters. For the indigenous people, nature is also means of transport, source of food, building and hunting materials etc. Therefore, in this module you will learn about the ways people living in the Amazon forest use river and forest abundance.

This module consists of a presentation with a voice-over and a movie clip (a BBC documentary about the Amazon forest – you can watch the required 11 minutes 34 seconds or you can watch the whole episode on You Tube. There also is a pdf file with the video script attached to this module.
