Module V

Ethics of the Amazonian research

The topic of ethics in anthropological research is especially accurate for the Amazon region. Certain events that took place in the area influenced the way we think about interactions with indigenous peoples.

The articles that are presented here 1 refer to the so-called “Yanomami controversy” also known as “Yanomami crisis” – an example of the abuse of power by the anthropologists conducting research in Yanomami settlements. It is impossible to present the complex problem in detail with only two articles, but they are a good start to exploring the issue of ethics in anthropology. The Yanomami controversy began in 1968 and is not fully resolved to this day. Nevertheless, it influenced the changes in the Code of Ethics as well as the methods of teaching ethics in academic courses. You can find more on this topic in the “dig deeper section” attached to this module.
